Ruby City Revisions.
Jan. 20th, 2014 04:15 pmFirst of all, I would like to note that I never intended to be dismissive towards the manga canon and I'm sorry it came across like that. I only wanted to note that I haven't actually read the manga all the way through, so I'm unable to play from it. I only know what I've been told. I base Ryuji's personality and characterization off of the anime.
For players who are from the manga canon, I intend to speak with the mun directly and see how they would prefer things be handled. I think there are a few options. One is that the manga and anime, while having differences especially where certain characters are concerned, are similar enough that things can be fudged and we can work with it and play them as if from the same canon. The other option is that, given the different worlds already in Ruby City, they can be played as just extremely similar, but different, universes. Whichever the other muns prefer really.
In regards to why Ryuji challenged Yugi, he did it because he wanted revenge for Pegasus's defeat. Ryuji idolized Pegasus and believed Pegasus was the best duelist in the world and he didn't think it should have been possible for Yugi to beat him like he did and Ryuji was determined to restore Pegasus's reputation and prove Yugi wasn't as good as everyone said. He wanted to show Yugi up like Yugi had shown Pegasus up.
The reason for this is because Ryuji idolizes his mentors. He thinks the world of them and will do anything to protect them or their honor. He also doesn't entertain the idea that someone could actually lose on their own, if he they're someone he admires. Ryuji puts very little faith in most people, seen in how he's usually the one to voice suspicions of people's motives among Yugi's friends, but when he does put faith in someone, it's absolute.
He can't conceive of them messing up, or being anything less than perfect. In that respect he tends to hold people in either very high esteem (Pegasus, Yugi himself post-Dungeon Dice Masters defeat), or very little esteem (Jonouchi, although his attitude towards Jonouchi does somewhat improve later on). For Ryuji there is no middle ground in how he approaches life or other people, it's either all good or it's all bad. This tendency to go to extremes is somewhat hidden behind his laidback attitude, but it's definitely there.
I hope this provides sufficient light on his motivations.
